(Vincente Minnelli, US 1945, 90 min., 35mm)
Small-town soldier Joe Allen (Robert Walker) meets Alice Mayberry (Judy Garland) on a 48-hour leave in crowded Penn Station when she trips over his foot, breaking the heel off one of her shoes. What ensues is a whirlwind romance that takes place over the course of Allen’s leave. From visiting sites in New York City such as the Central Park Zoo and the Metropolitan Museum of Art to running through the streets to deliver milk, Joe and Alice take advantage of every moment they have together. The Clock serves as Garland’s first dramatic role, breaking her away from the string of MGM musicals she had done previously.
