It Happened One Night

Sunday, December 31, 2017, 7:30 p.m., Dryden Theatre

(Frank Capra, US 1934, 105 min., 35mm)

Happy New Year | Holidays | Capra. Sparks fly when a headstrong runaway heiress (Claudette Colbert) and a cynical, down-on-his-luck reporter (Clark Gable) battle hunger and each other on a cross-country trek via bus, thumb, and auto. This sleeper hit of 1934 swept the top five Academy Awards, established Capra as a major director, and initiated the screwball comedy-romance cycle. The sexual tension woven into the rapid-fire verbal exchanges leaps off the screen at the sight of Colbert’s traffic-stopping gams and Gable’s bare chest, the latter of which was famously rumored to have caused a drastic drop in underwear sales. Climb aboard for wild ride to the New Year!
