Tuition: $900 ($800 members), plus $70 materials fee (includes weekend pass for Nitrate Picture Show)
Workshop for 6 participants

This workshop is expected to sell out quickly. Get hands-on experience making black-and-white 35mm perforated film stock. This workshop is scheduled so those attending the Nitrate Picture Show over the weekend (May 4–6) can stay past the festival and learn how to make film. Workshop tuition includes a weekend pass to the film festival. The group will make a gelatin silver bromide emulsion, coat acetate film base, then slit and perforate the film stock. Using a Bell & Howell Eyemo 35mm motion picture camera, participants will shoot this film in the same historic gardens filmed by George Eastman and Thomas Edison nearly a century ago. We will then chemically process the film, and participants will travel to the museum’s off-site digital preservation lab and watch as the film is digitally scanned and inverted for viewing as a positive motion picture. Participants will take home the negative film clips they make and a video assemblage of all of the positive film scenes. Each participant will receive a manual written by Mark Osterman with all formulas and instructions to make the emulsion used during this workshop.

Audience: Limited to six, this four-day workshop is designed for those who want to gain a strong understanding of the making of motion picture film. No experience necessary.

Important Cancellation Policy: No refunds will be given for cancellations made by the participant once registered for this workshop unless their vacancy can be filled.
