NOTES: Catalogued 10/93, DZ. "In July 1887 Emerson and Goodall hired a houseboat on Breydon water for three months. Goodall made a large painting of a view of the Yarmouth across the water - 'The Last of the Ebb', illustrated as pl. XXX. Emerson wrote the story of their observations of local life and adventures, stating that he composed his writing, all taken from life, as a painter composes a picture. The taking of the photographs was a joint venture on the whole, with Emerson making the technical decisions and Goodall helping to choose the subjects. The pictures are very different from most of Emerson's previous works... The plates were etched by A. Dawson and W.L. Colls and great care was taken over the choice of paper to vary the result. Emerson worked closely with Colls, who was a fine exponent of the art of photo- gravure." [Life and Landscape: P.H. Emerson Art & Photography in East Anglia 1885-1900--, p. 36] "Printed by T. & A. Constable, printers to Her Majesty at the Edinburgh University Press." "This ordinary edition is limited to 500 copies, of which this is copy No. 146."
