Byrd, Richard E. DESCRIPTIVE TITLE:
autographed view of man driving dog sled across barren winter
landscape
ca. 1933
INSCRIPTION:
recto (ink): [signature]
verso (pencil): 14140 [encircled]
FRAME: a piece of brown paper tape is attached to top of photo
NOTES:
Richard E. Byrd was a pioneer explorer in Antartica. He made five
important expeditions there (1928-56), established the base camp,
Little America there and spent the winter of 1933-34 alone at an
advance camp. (information from the Concord Desk Encyclopedia, 1982).
It is not unreasonable to think that this image, which is signed by
Byrd in ink on the recto, is a self-portrait, made at the time he
spent alone in the area.
